San Antonians may once again be able to get trashed and use their phones to get a ride home from a stranger.
Maybe.
Mayor Ivy Taylor directed City Manager Sheryl Sculley to “develop a framework for operating agreements” with transportation network companies such as Uber and Lyft, according to a Friday news release.
Here is Taylor’s full statement:
“I am directing the City Manager to develop a framework for operating agreements which would allow for TNCs to return to San Antonio during a pilot period. This framework will be brought to Council for review the second week of August and action thereafter. I have asked Councilman Treviño to be the Council representative during this process.
It is important that we get this issue resolved soon, and I do not want the work to stop during the month of July.
Safety will still be a top priority for all of us, and that won't change.”
Taylor’s statement doesn’t include details about when the new framework would be completed, nor how it would differ from the package of regulations that Uber and Lyft rejected earlier this year.
Both companies left San Antonio in April after the City Council approved stricter driver background check rules, which Uber and Lyft found too restrictive.
