Meet the Artists: 100Palabras

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-02-16

Writers often scribble about art that they see, but not always with much style. To hear an artful reading, check out a special presentation by the artists and writers of 100Palabras this Thursday at Guadalupe Gallery. Six writers were each paired with an artist in this show that gets its name from the task that was handed out. While the artists were free to work in any mode they chose, and have come up with an array of styles that spans hieroglyphs to graffiti (with a dose of Surrealism thrown in), the writers were restricted to using 100 words in their efforts. Such a short word count could have resulted in something looking like a laundry list, but they instead all wrote poetry. A few of the submissions were written in Spanish, but English translations are available for the linguistically challenged. The evening begins with a tour of works by artists Andy Benavides, Katherine Brown, Ana Fernandez, Cesar Martinez, Chris Sauter, and Louis Vega Treviño. Each artwork’s poem will be read by the author, along with other works by the writer. The poets are Grisel Y. Acosta, Anel Flores, Laurie Ann Guerrero, Ignacio Magaloni, Robert Talamantes Garcia, and Ben Tremillo. Free, 7pm Thu, Feb 17, Guadalupe Gallery, 723 S. Brazos St., (210) 271-3151, Exhibit on view through March 19.
