Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-03-24

Brought to you by the Mizuumi Anime Club (considered one of Our Lady of the Lake University’s most active and fun student organizations), Mizuumi-Con 4 is a one-day, kid-friendly convention that celebrates anime and other colorful aspects of Japanese culture. Last year, more than 1,500 anime fans attended Mizuumi-Con 3, proceeds from which were recently donated to the Red Cross to benefit tsunami relief efforts in Japan. Mizuumi-Con 4’s featured guests include Jack De Sena and Jessie Flower (the voices of Sokka and Toph from the Emmy-winning animated television series Avatar: The Last Airbender, respectively), anime voice actors Samantha Inoue-Harte and Cristina Vee, and fire performers Nocturnal Sol. If shopping for comics, superhero T-shirts, and big-eyed action figures isn’t your thing, pay homage to Japan by partaking in karaoke, calligraphy, or anime dating games. But cosplay (a fantastical marriage of the words “costume” and “play”) in all its forms (skits, competitions, and games of living chess) is reason enough to head to OLLU on Saturday with camera in tow. $15 (cash only, but ATM onsite), 10am-midnight, Our Lady of the Lake University, 411 SW 24th, mizuumicon.org.
