It’s been nearly 15 years since Mogwai’s debut Young Team, and they still have whatever it is that made us care why “Mogwai Fear Satan” in the first place. Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will is a collection of less-than-somber tunes produced by Paul Savage that navigates the relationship between life and the process of living it. Although Glasgow is no longer home base, the boys have woven a discrete sound from their respective posts. Opener “White Noise” has the cadence of an affectionate conversation turned hurtful-though- constructive, because love exists somewhere in that middle space. Hardcore is tempered with a certain boundlessness, offering cautionary melodies sprinkled throughout to bring the listener on a journey of remembering. There’s an earnestness in the layered tones of “Death Rays” that urges you to keep going — to drive until sunrise. A narrative of bitterness and optimism, “How To Be A Werewolf” is a sonic safe house and, though delicate, sludge-filled “You’re Lionel Richie” is harsh yet still thankful. Perfect for a long drive, Hardcore is a fulfilling conversation replete with celebratory bursts and low ruminative chords.
