“Murals” — Golden Lights

An acoustic guitar strum is followed by non-regional surf-and-wind ambience and what sounds like a mid-sized bong hit. A xylophone-led melody and sunny nasal-tenor vocals mostly proclaim variations of “whooooooyeaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh.” In other words, it’s the kind of thing you’ve heard before — some straight-ahead Southern Californian surf pop in a little less than four minutes, with neither the complex harmonies nor studio virtuosity that marked the best of the obvious influences. But that bedroom-beach-bum style is easily imitable and nearly infinitely listenable, and Golden Lights have the formula down.
