The former Robert Zimmerman turns 65 on Wednesday, May 24, and that same night, Casbeers presents its 9th annual Bob Dylan Birthday Bash, with a host of local and visiting artists paying tribute to the incomparable career of rock’s first great bard (with apologies to Chuck Berry and Jerry Leiber). Performers include Claude “Butch” Morgan, Carolyn Wonderland, Rosie Flores, Marcus Rubio, Stevie Tombstone, Elana James, George Batista, and Kelly Jacklin. Cover is $15, and proceeds will benefit the Southwest Mental Health Center.
Montreal native Alain Macklovitch, aka DJ A-Trak, scratched his first record at the tender age of 13. After using his bar-mitzvah cash to buy another turntable and mixer, he devoted the next two year to intense practice and became the youngest DMC World Champion in the history of the turntablist competition. Soon after that, he was invited to join the legendary Bay area DJ crew, the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, and ultimately won DJ titles in an array of categories before retiring from battling at age 18.
In 2004, A-Trak linked up with Kanye West and has been touring with him ever since. The duo recently rocked the Coachella Music Festival and A-Trak is also touring solo behind his DVD documentary Sunglasses Is A Must. The doc is a quirky, beat-driven look at A-Trak’s evolution from turntable prodigy to mature recording artist. Having already crafted tracks for Common and Kanye, A-Trak is currently finishing his debut album, which will include guest verses from MF Doom and the Dipset crew. A-Trak plays the Parish in Austin on Friday, May 26, and for locals not willing to make the trek up I-35, Travis 151 will offer a free screening of Sunglasses Is A Must that same evening at 10 p.m.
