A week on the scene
While the hard-rocking likes of AFI and Helmet will seize most of the attention at this weekend’s Vans Warped Tour stop, the festival also includes a Local Heroes Stage, featuring four San Antonio-area bands: Furthest From the Star, Moments in Tragedy, Prevail Within, and The Tale Of. The Vans Warped Tour comes to Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Selma on Sunday, July 2, beginning at noon.
Local underground rock trio Big Soy recently landed back in San Antonio after a tour of Great Britain that also included some recording work. The band, which released its debut CD Putting the _ in _ last year, celebrates its homecoming with two shows this week: Thursday, June 29 at Rock City Bar (115 General Krueger) with Not the Government, Fin del Mar, and AM Syndicate, and Friday, June 30 at Limelight Music and Drinks (2718 N. St. Mary’s) with Druggist, and others to be announced.
Thanks to the promotional efforts of Skullening, San Antonio’s favorite masked band of punks, this city will host a no-wave noise extravaganza headlined by Hartford, Connecticut, trio the Magik Markers. Fronted by unhinged, inspired singer-guitarist Elisa Ambrogio (known for assaulting her guitar with all manner of found objects), the Markers have been aided mightily by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, recording for Moore’s Ecstatic Peace label and touring with Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr., among others. The Magik Markers are scheduled to perform at the Lounge at Avenue B on Saturday, July 1, along with Lambsbread, Skullening, and Horn of Africa.
