Get ready, Southsiders, Folklores Coffee House is opening soon. The brainchild of husband-and-wife team Tatu (formerly with the Grand Hyatt San Antonio) and Emilie Herrera, Folklores was inspired by the couple’s European travels in Italy, France and Sweden where they often encountered various coffee shops hidden throughout the city.
The pair originally bought the location to open a new restaurant, but soon realized that their nearby coffee choices were Starbucks or to leaving the South Side for a 15 to 20 minute drive to the nearest locally owned coffee shop. That’s where the concept of Folklores came to be. The Herreras wanted to building something nearby and cozy for the people of the South Side and for students to come and study.
Folklores is going to be a third wave coffee shop so that people can try coffee that’s brewed in different ways. Herrera hopes that Folklores becomes a pillar in the community and hosts events like poetry slams, live storytelling and cooking classes. They’re planning to offer coffee flights so customers will be able to taste different coffees from around San Antonio, but are currently still zeroing in on what local roaster they’ll carry. CBD coffee and oils will also be featured along with small bites like sandwiches, salads and the chicken in a waffle cones.
The location will be able to hold about 35 people with seating indoors and outside. Folklores is shooting for an opening date in the next month so follow them on Facebook for their announcement. In the meantime, check them out at Highland Park Farmers Market at 901 Rigsby every second Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. where they’ll be selling cups of coffee and chicken in a waffle cones.
