No College Football Championship for San Antonio

The Alamo City won't host the College Football Playoff National Championship anytime in the near future.

Atlanta, which is finishing up a new $1.4 billion stadium, hosts the game that will be played in the new facility in 2018. The 2019 game takes place in Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California — a $1.3 billion stadium that opened in 2014 — where the San Francisco 49ers play. And in 2020, the championship will be played in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, which is undergoing a $40 million renovation.

In January, San Antonio City Council approved a $41 million upgrade to the Alamodome, which was part of the pitch for the championship and for 2018 NCAA Final Four, which the city secured.

These are the fourth, fifth and sixth national championship games of the new College Football Playoff era. The second game will be hosted in January 2016 in Glendale, Arizona. Tampa, Florida hosts the championship in 2017.
