Overtime Theater Mashing Up Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Night's Dream

The mashup is a quintessential postmodern art form. The fusing together of two or more works — most often songs, but certainly not exclusively — can sometimes produce novel juxtapositions that accentuate hidden or underplayed elements of the originals while resulting in an interesting new whole. And, sometimes, it’s terrible — what was best about each original gets muddled and the new product can’t stand on its own.

Fortunately, this new play by Scott McDowell seems to avoid the latter category in its unique and clever melding of the classic Shakespeare comedies Much Ado About Nothing and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Ever wonder how the ridiculously dour villain Don John would play if he were more like the iconic trickster Puck? This weekend is your first chance to find out.
