Party Tricks is an exhibition of sculptures and paintings by Houston-based artist Melinda Laszczynski. The sculptural works in the show combine traditional materials and those associated with celebration or dress-up that become figurative or abstractions of the body, while simultaneously being seductive and discomforting. The paintings in the show are indulgent in tactility, using shiny, bright surfaces and thick textured layers of paint that reflect the viewer and surroundings and activate movement within the paintings. These works highlight both the desire for escape into another world, and a feminist critique of abstraction.
