Phil Anselmo on His Top Bands

Superjoint Ritual

“All the intentions were really good, but I wasn’t in the best frame of mind as a person. Certain band members, I think, took advantage of the situation with myself being in a bad place, which eventually turned me off of the whole thing. Fun while it lasted, with a bitter ending.”

Pantera

“Great musicians and the tightest band I’ve ever been in. Some of the best times in my life. The loss of [guitarist] Dimebag [Darrell Abbott, assassinated in 2004] marked a sad ending because it means [Pantera] will never happen again. But there’s more great memories than bad memories.”

Down

“We are wrapping up our new EP and the guys [came over in December] to [record] lead guitars. The EP should be ready to go out within the first quarter of 2014. We’re going strong and it’s a good atmosphere.”

The Illegals

“I always envisioned these were the guys I wanted to play with [as a solo artist]. I felt there was room in metal for different expressions and time signatures within extreme music, different parts that go together and flow together, and I’m very pleased with the album we made.”
