Pick of the Day: The Marvelous Wonderettes

marvelous wonderettes

When the lead singer of the Crooning Crab Cakes gets suspended for smoking, it’s up to the Marvelous Wonderettes to step in and headline the Springfield High School Prom. Comprised of Cindy Lou, Betty Jean, Suzy, and Missy, the namesake girl-group carries Roger Bean’s jukebox musical through two eras of pop. After establishing in act one (set in 1958) that Betty Jean’s boyfriend is cheating on her with Cindy Lou (“Lipstick on Your Collar”) and that Missy’s in love with a teacher (“Mr. Lee”), act two leaps to a 10-year reunion where the Wonderettes have traded in their pinafores for miniskirts and learned the musical ways of Aretha (“Respect”) and Dusty (“Son of a Preacherman”). Jovi Gonzales and Jonathan Pennington co-direct the “musical trip down memory lane” at the Cameo. $15-$33; 3:30pm Sun, Sep 30; Cameo Theatre, 1123 E Commerce, (210) 212-5454, Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here:
