Pick of the Day: The Nightmare River Band

nightmare river band

Alt-country boys The Nightmare River Band are bringing their raucous party to town “whether you like it or not.” Made up of core members Matt Krahula (vocals, guitar, ukulele) and Seth Faulk (drums, vocals) along with Jason Wexler, Paul Madison, and Bobby Pawlings, the New York-based band stirs “foot-stomping rhythms, full arrangements, and a harmonious chorus” into fast-paced songs about love, loss, pain, drinking, and healing — in no particular order. Named in honor of the down-and-dirty River Bottom Nightmare Gang introduced in the 1971 children’s book Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas, the quintet maintains a refreshing sense of humor — evidenced by a cow-punk cover of Katy Perry’s bipolar pop anthem “Hot n Cold” and a sophomore album (this year’s Last Goodbye) with playful references to robots and Superman. Also on the bill: Jerry Fuentes and David Fenley and the Good Deal. $5; 8pm Thu, Sep 6; 502 Bar, 502 Embassy Oaks, (210) 257-8125, 502bar.com. Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here: calendar.sacurrent.com.
