You can safely expect the unexpected from local artist Jimmy James Canales, who often creates works that blur boundaries between performance, sculpture, costumery and bodily rituals. As we reminded readers last October, Canales once had his knuckles tattooed in front of an audience at the McNay; moved into UTSA’s Satellite Space for a period of three weeks; turned Artpace’s Main Avenue windows into a stage for a series of exploits, experiments and performances; and left memorable impressions with public appearances as would-be urban legends covered in foliage (Monte Man) and raccoon tails (Mapache Man). Last October, Canales hit a high note with “Para Chrome,” a Presa House pop-up exhibition that transformed FL!GHT Gallery into a sleek, sci-fi-inspired showroom for an intriguing array of “armor, exoskeletons and customized packs” that could be worn by the artist himself. To complement that show, Canales worked with married filmmaking duo Mark and Angela Walley on two shorts — one of which features Canales wearing a chrome harness, gazing into a tiny bicycle mirror and combing his hair and mustache while Roberta Flack’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” plays in the background. Although many of his absurdist endeavors fall into the “gotta see it to get it” category, they’re also refreshingly humorous and devoid of pretension. Promising something of an extension of the wearable curiosities introduced in “Para Chrome,” Canales’ new Sala Diaz exhibition “Receiving Interrupt” takes shape in a “playful, dark, engaging and alarming” series of “humanoid sculptures” and “participatory objects” rendered in PVC, wood, acoustic foam and parachute cords.
