Much like Andy Warhol’s pop icons represent New York, Ed Ruscha’s influential paintings—some rendered in such unlikely materials as gunpowder, caviar and Pepto-Bismol—epitomize LA. Yet one of Ruscha’s most monumental odes to Americana depicts a Standard gas station in Amarillo. The McNay’s “Regarding Ruscha” presents works by the Nebraska native (including an artist proof of Standard Station) alongside homages by local artists Ethel Shipton, Jeremiah Teutsch, Joe de la Cruz and others.
