Rock of Ages

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-05-11

The over-the-top sounds and styles of the 1980s come to life in Rock of Ages, a musical comedy that revisits such timeless classics as Quiet Riot’s “Cum on Feel the Noize,” Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” and Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It.” While some might assume Chris D’Arienzo’s “jukebox musical” is little more than two-plus hours of karaoke in dated drag (skin-tight leather, acid-washed denim, zebra-print spandex, and, as The New York Times put it, “frothing piles of pleated, teased, bleached, dyed and fried tresses”), Rock of Ages has earned five Tony nominations and is being adapted for a 2012 film starring Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Paul Giamatti, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and other A-listers. The storyline’s simple (a hopeful rocker from Michigan falls for an aspiring actress from Kansas and the two do a lot of singing in L.A.’s Bourbon Room — a club on the Sunset Strip in danger of being razed), which leaves plenty of room for the main attraction: choreographed power ballads. $20.75-$70.75, 8pm Wed, May 11; 8pm Thu, May 12; 8pm Fri, May 13; 2pm and 8pm Sat, May 14; 2pm and 7:30pm Sun, May 15; The Majestic Theatre, 224 E Houston, (210) 226-3333,,
