SA Music Showcase: Jazz at Sancho’s Cantina & Cocina

Jazz, all too often written off by casual music listeners as boring, probably owing to a lack of patience or a lame experience with the soft/mellow jazz subgenre, is the most adventurous, spontaneous form of music we’ve got. Though perhaps under-discussed, jazz, for me, is also capable of being the most psychedelic genre in the American sonic spectrum.

In the live setting, which is really how most jazz is recorded too, jazz musicians, keen followers of their own intuition, are experts at adaptation and improvisation.

The host venue for this showcase, Sancho’s, has, despite the fact that it is largely ruled by patio space, the tucked away kind of feeling that was a hallmark of some of the original jazz clubs.

At this show, featuring representations a few different segments of the sprawling genre, jazz fans and the curious alike are invited to sample some of the finest local practitioners of this great American form.

The Spiders are a led by local jazz guru and human spark plug Tony Romero. The band comes in many configurations and, with Romero’s guidance, proves adept at everything from swinging jazz featuring upright bass to wild free jazz to funky, groove-oriented stuff.

As far as the other two acts on this bill, Hot Sauce, for one, offers up a brand of jazz that traffics heavily in Latin grooves. Meanwhile, the inventive force of nature that is Head Space, makes a kind of jazz that incorporates elements of funk, soul, rock and roll, hip-hop and blues.
