Miss Ellie’s Pizza of New York, a classic pizza parlor tucked away in a small shopping center at Bitters and 281 in north San Antonio, is exactly as you’d expect it to be. Once inside, you’d swear you were back in Queens with the large pizza ovens and the pies made by hand and presented for your choosing. These pizzas are heavenly and prepared top notch — that right mix of crunch and chew, a vast plethora of offerings teasing you from behind the glass. The calzones and pizza rolls are all exquisitely cheesy. The heroes — hot or cold — are second to none. But it’s the garlic knots for which we always come back.
Miss Ellie’s garlic knots are truly a thing of beauty. The amount of butter and garlic that are actually in these babies have got to be breaking all kinds of scientific laws, and we will gladly offer ourselves up to study them as much as is needed. Fresh and steamy-hot right out of the oven, the knots are made of a dough that's always unbelievably soft and melt-in-your-mouth good. Dipping them in the accompanying scratch marinara sauce only enhances the flavors that emanate from these small puffs of ecstasy. Orders come in six knots or 12, and while each knot is ample-sized, you’ll find putting away six is not that hard of a feat to accomplish. They’re. That. Good.
