Here's some great news if you're a fútbol fan: San Antonio is joining the North American Soccer League!

Beginning in 2012, the expansion team will begin playing at the 14-field STAR (South Texas Area Regional) complex on the northeast side of the city. Local businessman and native San Antonian Gordon Hartman is responsible for spearheading the effort to bring the city its first professional soccer team.

Although not as currently well-known as MLS, the NASL was founded in 1968 and in the 70s and 80s featured international stars such as Pelé and George Best. The original league ended play in 1986, but with renewed interest in the sport catching on in the United States, the group has been reinstated in major cities across the country. In fact, one of the best aspects of the new team is the fact that Austin already has a team — instant rivalry!
