Facebook, Girl in a Coma
Few local bands have made the impact that Girl in a Coma has. And whether folks here realize it or not, dealing with the boys club that is the music industry combined with the still problematic machismo culture that exists in San Antonio, that impact is even greater thanks to these young women. From touring with the likes of Morrissey, Social Distortion and Tegan and Sara, to building an enormous cult-like following across the U.S. and abroad, Phanie Diaz, Nina Diaz and Jenn Alva broke through the glass ceilings that most local acts run into and kept pushing higher.
On Thursday, Phanie released a statement on her Facebook page stating that the band was officially done. With Nina moving to Los Angeles to focus on her solo project and Phanie and Jenn continuing to tour relentlessly with their riot grrrrl act Fea (which got a shout out from Iggy Pop himself in Rolling Stone), the split seemed natural, but it doesn’t mean it wasn’t an emotional break.
“Jenn and I kind of wanted to have a last show to kind of give closure to [Girl in a Coma],” Diaz explained. “But Nina’s kind of not ready for it, and she’s doing her thing in LA, so we were like ‘OK, well, if we can’t have that last show, Jenn and I kind of want to have our own closure and not just put out this statement as a group, but how we each individually feel.”

“I know how long we’ve been together, and what we’ve done as a band but posting the statement was all kinds of an emotional ride ‘cause people were telling their stories [and sharing memories they had with the band],” Phanie wrote. “I remember people coming with their two year old daughters and now their daughters have kids and i’m like ‘god damn’ I just didnt’ realize how long it’s been – hearing the stories, and seeing pictures [fans posted on our Facebook] of us younger.”

Nina left for LA last week and couldn’t be reached for a statement, however Phanie hinted that Nina could be releasing a video with her own explanation for the departure from Girl in a Coma.
