How much is your data worth?

Boston-based Cambridge Mobile Telematics is guessing Alamo City drivers are willing to share their driving habits for a shot at a $10,000 prize. The tech company is offering a free mobile app called San Antonio's Safest Driver that uses your cellphone to detect when you're speeding up, braking, taking corners too fast and messing with your phone while driving (naughty, naughty).

Using data it collects from June 11 through Sept. 3, Cambridge will offer $10,000 prizes for the city's Overall Safest Driver, Least Distracted Driver and Safest Military Driver. Also up for grabs are 54 $500 prizes for other safe drivers plus $4,700 in randomly selected cash prizes for anyone who downloads the app.

But there's a catch.

Your driving data will be shared with the city of San Antonio for its Vision Zero initiative, which aims to reduce traffic casualties, and with insurance giant USAA, which is underwriting the contest and no doubt could use real driver data to improve its bottom line.

Is it worth giving up your data for a chance, however slim, at winning some cash? Maybe so. I mean, it's not like most of us have ever seen a dime from Facebook for all the data we've let it make off with.
