The low-down on this week's premieres
In The Cave, in addition to bat guano, stalagmites, and your occasional neanderthal, you can find actors Cole Hauser (Paparazzi), Morris Chestnut (Ladder 49), Eddie Cibrian (ESPN's Tilt), and Piper Perabo (Coyote Ugly) fending off bloodthirsty creatures. If you like visiting Natural Bridge Caverns, maybe you should stay out of the dark for this one.
The final piece of director Gus Van Sant's "Death Trilogy" (2002's Gerry and 2003's Elephant are the first two films), Last Days is another minimalist venture, this one loosely based on the final days of deceased Nirvana rocker Kurt Cobain. Actor Michael Pitt (The Dreamers) plays Blake, the loner musician with an uncanny resemblance to the manic guitarist.
A group of aspiring entertainers attempt to make a career for themselves in Los Angeles in Undiscovered. Just a guess, but maybe they're having a hard time making it because they lack the talent. In related news, Ashlee Simpson stars in the film.
Bad news, bear lovers. Grizzly Man didn't open last week, but is promised to us at the Bijou this Friday `see "The 25th grizzly," August 18-24, 2005`. The documentary explores the life of self-proclaimed "eco warrior" Timothy Treadwell, who spent 13 summers among the grizzly bears in the Alaskan wilderness before he and his girlfriend were killed by one of the animals he promised to protect. •
