Skeletal Lamping

Skeletal Lamping

Label: Polyvinyl
Release Date: 2008-10-22
Rated: NONE
Genre: Recording

Of Montreal, with frontman Kevin Barnes’ eccentricities and glam-rock alter ego, is too strange to ever be fully accepted by the mainstream. And, for those who don’t consider Of Montreal a personal favorite by now, Skeletal Lamping isn’t likely to change your opinion, not when Barnes and company are so prone to getting bogged down in their own excess. Such is the case with unnecessary tracks like “For Our Elegant Caste,” in which Barnes’ high-pitched coo is simply grating, and third-rate Prince imitation “Wicked Wisdom.”

But Skeletal Lamping does have its high points. The slow-paced “Death Is Not a Parallel Move” stands out, while “St. Exquisite’s Confessions” would be right at home should Quentin Tarantino ever direct a chick flick. And Barnes’ penchant for sexual lyrics — “I want to make you ejaculate till it’s no longer fun” is a personal favorite — makes for an always interesting, if not exactly arousing, experience.
