Slideshow: The very First Thursday & Friday of 2011

A handful of shows made 2011’s very First Thursday/Friday entirely memorable, and I even bought some art (Franco Mondini-Ruiz’s “Rabbit Food,” a figurine of a bunny tipping over a tub of coleslaw, $20). In fact, the amount deals to be had at Blue Star Contemporary Art Center seemed to be making art fans forget that Christmas has already come and gone. While Mondini-Ruiz bargained with customers at a pop-up shop, “Infinito Botánica,” a re-creation of his installation for the 2000 Whitney Biennial, Paper City’s Catherine D. Anspon signed and sold numbered copies of her new book, Texas Artists Today, in which Mondini-Ruiz is featured.



Fl!ght Gallery’s Ed Saavedra transformed BSCAC’s Gallery 4 by cutting the space in half with a diagonal wall. With one painting cut into two strategic pieces, Saavedra’s Requiem for an English Major referenced Thomas Gainsborough's “The Blue Boy” as well as a symbolic Bexar County suicide.


Among the Sean FitzGibbons sculptures Taking Up Space at Justiceworks Studio is an $11,000 chandelier, created in collaboration with glass artist Jake Zollie Harper.


And sorority sisters collided with “Hannah Montana” addicts at UTSA Satellite Space, where photographers Leah DeVun and Sarah Sudhoff presented Femininity Constructed, a sharply-executed study of pop culture and female rites of passage.
