S'nuff Film

San Antonio resident and Texas State Spanish student Juliana Hinojosa took second place in the Bridgestone Americas Safety Scholars Video Contest for her short film encouraging safe driving practices. Solar San Antonio ( continues its monthly movies screenings Thursday, August 20, with Trashed, “a provocative investigation of one of the fastest growing industries in North America — the garbage business.” Americans throw away five pounds of garbage apiece every day, claims the film, but where does it all go? Since this is America, you have to assume somebody’s making an unconscionable amount of money of this shit. Tickets are $9 ($5 for students and members of SSA or various other local conservation groups) and the film begins at 7:30 p.m. at Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes (1255 SW Loop 410).

If all that’s got you bummed out, head to the Drafthouse tonight, at either 7 p.m. or 9 p.m. when they’ll be screening the SA entries in this year’s 48 Hour Film Project. Some of these will no doubt be depressing as well, but at least they’ll be really short and hastily thrown together. A panel of judges will choose the winners, and San Antonio’s top film (as well as the winners from the other 48 HFP cities) will soon be available for online viewing
