SOLI Chamber Ensemble Concert

When: Sat., Nov. 1, 7:30 p.m. and Tue., Dec. 2, 7:30 p.m. 2014

If cutting-edge and classical seem at odds with each other, SOLI has proved better than anyone that the two can coexist beautifully. Since forming in 1994 with the aim to give “new voice to 20th and 21st century classical contemporary music,” the award-winning quartet has offered a crucial counterweight to a powdered-wig-dominated classical tradition in SA. On deck for their Tobin Center debut—which includes a post-concert release party for the double CD Hear—will be Terry Riley’s minimalist opus “In C,” the Beethoven’s 5th of the contemporary classical world. They’ve added an interesting twist to the show, however, inviting the audience to join in the performance of the piece (don’t worry, you shouldn’t need classical training to play your part). In keeping with their fantastic tradition of commissioning original works, the ensemble will also be performing a new piece by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec. (The performance on Tuesday will beheld at Ruth Taylor Recital Hall at Trinity University.)
