CHANGING SEASONS
The Carver Community Cultural Center released its program for its 2003-2004 performance season, which includes the return of the Little Carver Intimate Series at the Little Carver Civic Center.
The Intimate Series includes performances by the San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble, Ruthie Foster, and the Elision Saxophone Quartet, as well as an opening performance of Lorca, a new, one-man play featuring playwright, actor, and vocalist José Rubén De León. The Jazz Series will feature appearances by Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and the Jim Cullum Jazz Band. The Brian Brooks Moving Company, MOMIX, and the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company are featured in the Dance Series; and the Legends Series' lineup includes the Blind Boys of Alabama, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and Sekou Sundiata.
Although the season does not kickoff until October, the full program is available at the Carver (215 N. Hackberry St.) or can be requested through the Carver Center box office at 207-2234.
JAZZ IN THE AIRWAVES
The Jim Cullum Jazz Band's syndicated public radio broadcast, "Riverwalk: Live From the Landing," recently kicked off its summer series. The pre-recorded sets are now available to stream on demand. To listen, go to www.landing.com.
The series features the JCJB's live performances at the Landing (123 Losoya St., 223-7266). On Thursday, July 24, "Live From the Landing" will run "From Duke Ellington to Artie Shaw: Songwriting Bandleaders of the '30s," with Rebecca Kilgore. The following week, the show will feature special guest band, the New Black Eagle Jazz Band, with "Hot Jazz From the Big Easy to the Windy City." •
