Sound and the Fury
The third installment in Casbeers' monthly "Healthy Music Experiment" series (designed to help local musicians gain affordable health care) should be a bona fide corker, as jazz singer Bett Butler and bluegrass combo Tennessee Valley Authority join forces on Thursday, June 3. The showcases - spearheaded by Express-News music writer Jim Beal Jr. - have established a pattern of bringing together wildly disparate musicians, such as Ken Slavin and the Swindles, and Rusty Martin and Boxcar Satan. This month's show begins at 8:30 p.m.
Fight the power '04
If you make it to one conscious hip-hop show this summer, you can't go wrong with Talib Kweli, aka the student of truth. Whether performing as one of the members of Black Star, as part of Reflection Eternal, or all by his lonesome, Kweli, the anti-Chingy, will not disappoint.
Kweli's pro-Black, pro-gente verses put Rawkus Records on the map and his solo debut Quality received much critical acclaim. He is currently on tour behind his equally lauded LP, The Beautiful Mix, which features cameos by Jean Grae, Common, Kanye West, and Res.
This show also marks the SA return of ATL's Kool Akiem, the poor man's DJ Premier, who has been making quiet noise on the underground by taking San Anto's Assassyn Dynasty under his wing and propelling them to greater heights.
Kweli will perform at Sunset Station's Lone- star Pavilion on Tuesday, June 8. Tickets are $15 in advance, and $19 on the day of the show. Doors open at 7 p.m. Call 222-9481 for more info.
New year's day
For those willing to make the trek to Austin, another show to look for this week is the triple bill headlined by the artsy Chicago collective Tortoise, with support from The New Year and Beans. The New Year, a band composed of members from Dallas and Boston, is the ringer on this bill, a three-guitar ensemble that works mood, dynamics and sonic textures via beautifully constructed songs by the brother team of Matt and Bubba Kadane. In the early '90s, the Kadanes founded the much-admired Dallas band Bedhead, and The New Year has followed up on that group's implications, while subtly breaking new ground.
The New Year will be at Emo's on Tuesday, June 8. Call (512) 477-3667 for more info.
