Robert Earl Keen

A week on the scene

Walking the floore

On what shapes up to be an understandably slow yuletide week for live music, Floore Country Store trots out a couple of deep-voiced heavy hitters.

Robert Earl Keen, a Bandera native and one of the definitive Lone Star troubadours (not to mention a Texas A&M classmate of old pal Lyle Lovett), turns up on Thursday, December 23. Keen's career has been a slow burn, building an intensely loyal Texas following early in his career and gradually earning deserved appreciation outside this state's borders. He's currently promoting some of the highlights from his back catalog, with three of his early releases being reissued this year by Koch, and a 2001 Austin City Limits making it to DVD on the 17-song Live From Austin, TX. At Floore, he's sure to pull out the old-reliable musical stocking stuffer, "Merry Christmas From the Family," a drunken holiday saga that brings good cheer no matter what the month. It's enough to make us get over the fact that his fan-base includes Rick Perry and the Bush twins.

The night before Keen's performance, Bob Schneider will grace the Floore stage.

A solid craftsman prone to excessive cutesiness, Schneider is both beloved and reviled in Austin and known to E True Hollywood Story watchers as Sandra Bullock's obscure ex-boyfriend.

Floore Country Store is located at 14464 Bandera Road in Helotes. Call 695-8827 for more info.
