Special Anniversary Distinguished Lecture: Adam Gopnik

For the past hundred years, people of widely different backgrounds, and in various places—from Tokyo to San Antonio—have found the experience of looking at pictures of Paris and its people in the 1870s and 80s and beyond, to be specially moving, provocative, and life-affirming. What happened in France then to make art matter so much to so many, and what can we learn from the experience about what it means to be a modern man or woman?
