The ghoulish characters illustrator Charles Addams introduced in The New Yorker in 1938 remained nameless until the ’60s; now Gomez, Morticia, and Wednesday Addams are iconic monikers. Descending on Broadway in 2010, the musicalized version of The Addams Family unearths dialogue from Addams’ cartoons but owes more to the macabre sitcom they inspired. Featuring a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, the play sees ma and pa Addams at odds with Wednesday’s choice to date an all-American boy.
