Sunday Night Sound Bite: Little Dragon: "Pretty Girls"

Little Dragon

Formed in 1996, Swedish trip-hop/electronica quartet Little Dragon (frontwoman Yukimi Nagano plus bandmates Erik Bodin, Fredrik Källgren Wallin and Håkan Wirenstrand) struck an international chord with the title track off 2011’s Ritual Union and is scheduled to play Austin’s Moody Theater August 31 in support of 2014’s Nabuma Rubberband, which takes admitted cues from some of Janet Jackson's slower jams. Offering a strange sequel to Taylor Cohen's haunting video for Little Dragon’s "Klapp Klapp," simply named director Nabil’s video for "Pretty Girls" conjures a bizarre plot pairing zombies and beauty queens. Although the tempo is significantly slower, "Pretty Girls" owes stylistic credits (melody, vocal pacing and string instrumentation) to fellow Swede Robyn's big comeback track with Kleerup, 2007’s "With Every Heartbeat."
