San Antonio has unquestionably perfected the art of the spillover. Consider Angel Castorena, the founder and publisher of local music zine Backbeat, who has been booking SXSW spillover shows in San Antonio for almost eight years. The highlight was The Big Spill 2009, the SA-based festival in which Castorena and crew featured 150 bands in 10 days at two venues within walking distance of one another (The 1011 and the now-defunct Rock Bottom Tattoo Bar). One hundred of those were official SXSW bands, while 50 were local SA bands.
So how do spillover shows benefit San Antonio’s music community?
“It’s our duty as promoters to make sure these bands come to San Antonio, and it’s our only way to get them hooked on the city to come back,” said Castorena. “During South by, it’s not just bands from this country that we go after, it’s bands from around the world.”
Castorena said he plans to bring the actual festival back in 2012, but this year he and Backbeat have partnered with venues around the city to help promote seven of San Antonio’s biggest spillover shows (denoted by * in the following list). At each of the denoted shows, 50-100 silk-screened commemorative posters featuring artwork by Texas artists will be available for purchase; there will be seven different posters in the series.
But Castorena’s work is just an example of exemplary spillover booking that has been going on in San Antonio by various promoters for years now. So don’t worry if you weren’t able to shell out the ungodly amount of money it takes to get a wristband — we’ve put together this 2011 SXSA roundup for you. Though the list doesn’t contain every spillover show in the city, these are some of our favorites.
