- Dr. Irene Pepperburg and friends
Dr. Irene Pepperberg, a lecturer and research associate at Harvard University and an adjunct associate professor at Brandeis University’s Department of Psychology, is best known for her groundbreaking book, Alex and Me: How a Scientist and a Parrot Uncovered a Hidden World of Animal Intelligence - and Formed a Deep Bond in the Process. Over a 30-year period, Pepperberg studied her pet Alex, an African Grey parrot with a remarkable capacity for language and understanding. For her lecture Talking with Animals: Insights into the Nature of Consciousness, presented by the Mind Science Foundation, Pepperberg will share insights based on “the cognitive and communicative abilities” of African Greys, comparing their skills with those of great apes, marine mammals, and young children. General admission: $15 ($5 for students, seniors, and military), reception at 5:30pm, lecture at 6:30pm, Q&A at 7:30pm, Pearl Stable, 312 Pearl Parkway, (210) 821-6094, mindscience.org.
