You can use your phone to summon pretty much anything nowadays. If you can order a ride, a meal or a movie on-demand, then why not a friend?

That's what Ameego, an app from a Texas-born developer, aims to do.

Clay Kohut, an app developer from Fort Worth, created Ameego, a free app that lets you "rent a stranger," according to the Washington Post. Here's how the app describes itself:

Ameego makes it easy to find and hang out with friendly local people. Browse your city's socially-verified Ameego listings and request to hang out with awesome locals. Book and chat with local Ameegos inside of Ameego.

The idea is that those in need of a buddy can send a request to hang out with a vetted "Ameego," who will respond to the request within 24 hours. You guys chill, and then you rate the experience (tip optional). The hope, Kohut told the Post, is that you and the professional "Ameego" and actually become friends.

The app is currently only available in New York and San Francisco, but plans are to eventually expand — perhaps to Kohut's native Texas.
