Texas Uncommon beer on tap at Freetail Brewing Co.

There's no doubt that Anchor Brewing Co. helped jump start the craft beer movement to come when when it revived (and name trademarked) an old California style of beer called steam beer, but the brew known more generically as California Common is finding its way into more Texas breweries.

Freetail Brewing Co. in San Antonio just tapped its new Self eSteem Texas Uncommon beer. It is somewhat crisp, a little rich fruit character  and a mildly assertive citrus-like hop. This smacks of session beer and cries out for a second pint, very doable at just over 5 percent alcohol by volume.

The key is to ferment the beer at ale-like temperatures of more than 65 degrees, but using lager yeast that was designed to ferment at lower temperatures as perfected by Bohemian and Bavarian brewers.

Also new on tap at Freetail are Buffulo Hump 1840 IPA and barrel-aged Old Bat Rastard.
