Background: The Cookhouse has been a staple of the St. Mary’s Strip since it opened in 2014. The owners behind the Nawlins restaurant are also responsible for the late Where Y’at food truck and St. Mary’s neighbor, NOLA Brunch & Beignets. The Cookhouse, which used to be open for lunch, rid themselves of the mid-day meal and decided to open up a bit earlier for happy hour.
Happy Hour: The happy hour at Cookhouse features some menu favorites like boudin balls for $10 and featured po’ boys for $9. For drinks, the Cookhouse has two cocktails it features for $6 with wine being $1 off and Abita beer for $2. The discounted time runs daily between 5 and 7 p.m.
Patrons: Many of those attending the happy hour at the Cookhouse, seem to be attempting to snag a couple of deals while at the eatery enjoying dinner. Most groups, which mainly consist of families and older couples, are seated at tables while single diners sit at the bar.
Experience: I ventured to Cookhouse just after work on a Thursday, and the restaurant was empty for the most part — but the crowd was starting to pick up as dinner hours inched closer. While there were a couple of people and tables sat, there weren’t that many people inside. It took a while to be waited on, and when ordering, I found out one of the listed cocktails, the Sazerac, wasn’t actually available yet. There were other options, a Hurricane, $7 glass of red wine and $2 Abita beers. I opted for the wine and ordered the Boudin Balls. It was a hard decision to make as red beans and rice, gumbo and a variety of po’ boys were also happy hour options. The speed of service didn’t improve from the waiter or the kitchen throughout my visit. The food took a while to come out, as it is made to order, but the waiter was seldom to be found. Once the food finally arrived it became clear why the app is a popular option — it was delicious and paired excellently with the red wine. At less than a week old, the happy hour at The Cookhouse packs in great flavors and deals — and I'm definitely going back for that Sazerac — but maybe not when I’m in a rush.
