The Grassroots Media Justice Tour

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2008-10-15

What issues does the corporate media neglect in a one-daily-newspaper town? Where can we turn for grassroots organization and information to ensure we’re keeping pace with independent media outlets around the world? Sponsored by Left Turn Magazine, ColorLines Magazine, Free Speech Radio News, and other independent media projects, the Grassroots Media Justice Tour is currently moving through the South and Midwest in an attempt to reach frequently underserved and underfunded areas of the country with performances, workshops, and inspiration. Hadassah Hill, a Brooklyn-based queer femme writer, creative, and activist (right), and Jordan Flaherty, a writer and community organizer based in New Orleans, will lead the San Antonio stop. Hill is committed to empowering individuals to speak for themselves using new technologies, while Flaherty was the first journalist with a national audience to write about the Jena Six case — on tour, he will be using video, photos, and first-hand accounts to share the grassroots struggle around the Jena Six and New Orleans post-Katrina organizing. Free workshops w. Hill are Noon Friday and 7pm Monday, evening event w. Hill, Flaherty, & more 7pm Friday, $5 donation, Esperanza Center, 922 San Pedro, (210) 228-0201.
