THE SOUND & THE FURY

Great Northern Guns’ January 18 show at the Limelight drew a mix of underground-rock devotees and curiosity seekers anticipating hostility after a series of SA-bashing blogs from the band. The Guns set up shop on the floor in front of the stage, as if to invite adversaries closer. Despite the tittering crowd, the night was anticlimactic, apart from drummer Pat Schowe crashing through his kit to bring the set to a cathartic close.

Among the openers, Yoshimoto provided a musical highlight, with their Sonic Youth-like harnessing of harmonic dissonance. Make Your Own Maps frontman Travis Buffkin used his mic cord to mock-strangle an audience member, played with his Little Buffkin, and exposed his tattooed ass, all within the first five minutes.

Buffkin’s finest moment came when a male heckler compared his haircut to that of Ellen DeGeneres, and he shot back, “Ellen DeGeneres gets more pussy than you.” ...

Friends of jazz trombonist Ron Wilkins have organized a benefit concert to help him with medical bills related to his kidney damage. The show runs from 2-10 p.m. on Sunday, January 27 at Luna, with a bill that includes The Jazz Protagonists, Joan Carroll, and Ken Slavin.
