THE SOUND & THE FURY

One of the unsung musical pleasures in S.A. this summer has come from Main Plaza’s series of free, lunchtime concerts. The schedule has included Blue Monday shows featuring the likes of Spot Barnett and Eddie Polanco & The Allniters, and Tuesday-Friday gigs (11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.) which bound across genres with the Americana of The Swindles, the ambient Latin-jazz of Border Palace and the conjunto mastery of Eva Ybarra.

The music offerings are the brainchild of Marisela Barrera, program coordinator for the Main Plaza Conservancy, and a mainstay of the local theater community. In addition to the weekday concerts, Barrera has initiated a wide-ranging Saturday-night “Raza en la Plaza” series (the July 5 show went from Sirocco Middle Eastern Dance to art-pop quartet Buttercup), and flamenco performances on Friday nights.

This week will feature the thoroughly excellent Mariachi Los Galleros on Wednesday, July 23, followed by the David Villanueva Duo on Thursday, and the marimba/guitar bossa nova of Hot Sauce on Friday. A must-see for those downtown on the weekend will be the legendary sax-man Barnett on Saturday, July 26, from 8:15-10 p.m.
