Last week’s announcement of the 2009 SXSW band roster included highly familiar San Antonio names such as Mojoe, Question, Boxcar Satan, The Krayolas, Mitch Webb & the Swindles, and DJ Jester the Filipino Fist. It also featured emerging artists such as the roots-rocking Hacienda, hardcore machine Bitter End, and Chicano punks De Los Muertos.

At least one SA band picked for a SXSW showcase, however, could be paradoxically described as a veteran newcomer. Glambilly, the brainchild of bassist Hans Frank, has barely been gigging for a year, but its lineup should be familiar to those whose tastes veer toward the twangy. Frank most recently played in the C&W group 10 City Run, which parlayed a band-contest triumph into a recording deal with Universal South. But with 10 City Run’s music getting harder and more aggressive, Frank decided that the best course was to reboot and indulge his glam, garage, surf-rock, and rockabilly cravings under a new moniker. To that end, he brought along rock-solid drummer Bobby Natanson, whose resumé includes a stint with T-Bone Walker. ...
