This week, Hollywood offers you John Travolta in drag and homophobic firemen. I speak of Hairspray and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, respectively, and look, I’m just trying to keep our expectations nice and low, because, to misquote a recent A.V. Club interview with Patton Oswalt, I don’t hate movies, “`I’m` actually disappointed all the time, because `I` love movies and want them to be better.” If we lift our hopes for nothing (and no one!) Wrappers, perhaps we will be as pleasantly surprised as I was with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (page 28). Just remind me of this conversation when I begin to freak out this fall about Noah Baumbach, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Wes Anderson’s upcoming films, OK?

Now, let’s quell this talk of American cinema as the Bijou’s latest opening is Australia’s Introducing the Dwights.

Dwights features the underrated Brendan Blethyn as an overbearing mother and club performer whose son must choose between her and a “nubile” young woman (What? I didn’t say it, Steve Kellman did. See his review on page 26.).

Until next week, Wrappers, when I shall be suppressing my Sunshine-inspired excitement.

Local premiere dates for limited-release films are tentative and can change at the last minute. Please check your local theater listings to confirm showtimes.
