Just in case you wonder how you can best support our burgeoning musical landscape, here are three quick ways to ensure your favorite local outfits can keep doing the thing they love most: playing in front of you. By no means is this a comprehensive list of everything you can to to help, but certainly it's an effective start to keeping the buzz going for artists you like.
1. Go to their shows. It may seem obvious, but your presence in the audience makes all the difference. Even if it’s late or a weekday or maybe not the kind of bar you’d find yourself usually hanging out in, your favorite band is working hard to build a following, and your physical presence at their performances lets other folks at the show and the promoter or bar owner know, that they can bring people out. How many people a band draws affects how much a band is paid. Obviously, the more the better.
2. Buy their records and merch. You may have been friends with these people for a minute and think, “Oh, I mean, I’ve been to their shows, I’ve supported them by just showing up." That’s great. But spending $20 on that shirt usually goes directly toward their studio time or a Facebook ad. Every little bit counts when building a following as a local artist, so buy their stuff. Heck, buy a shirt for your friend too.
3. Promote your friends online. We’ve all done it: click the "share" button after a friend posts a new video from their band or a concert announcement on Facebook. Then we lean back in our chairs because we think we did our part. However, when you check later, there's a good chance that share only has something like one or two measly reactions. So what gives? Oh, the Algorithms! Yeah, Facebook puts the kibosh on actual "shares" for some reason. (Actually, for money reasons. Yes, they are a corporate machine.) So, the best way you can promote your friend is to generate a brand new post from your own timeline.
