The list of James Beard Award semifinalists is out and three San Antonio chefs are likely having a great Thursday.

As of Thursday morning, San Antonio's Steve McHugh has been nominated for a third time for Best Chef Southwest (a region that includes Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah). Also on the short list are Diego Galicia and Rico Torres, co-chefs and owners of Mixtli, and 2017's lineup of Best New Chefs per Food & Wine.

The chefs are in great company with several other Texan chefs making the list of 20 semifinalists, including Bryce Gilmore of Barley Swine in Austin, Regino Rojas of Dallas' Revolver Taco Lounge and two barbecue luminaries in Ronnie Killen of Killen’s Steakhouse in Pearland and Norma Frances “Tootsie” Tomanetz of Snow’s BBQ, Lexington. A list of final nominees will be shared March 14. The James Beard Awards, often billed the Oscars of restaurants, will take place May 7 in Chicago.
