Tyler, the Creator: 'Wolf'

On his third release, Tyler, the Creator blends almost innocent confessionals about his awkward attempts at love, his absent father, his deceased grandma, his chronic self-doubt with outbursts of visceral anger and brags about his new financial status. Familiar territory, in part, but the emotional payoff feels more tangible this time around, with a narrative that’s both clearer and more nuanced. However, the production on Wolf — entirely handled by Tyler himself — truly makes this his most dynamic effort to date. Brooding synths, scampering break beats, lush and crawling piano, strings, horns, screams, and perfectly chosen guest spots help create an enjoyable album that deserves multiple listens.
