“Wait” — Laura Marie

“I’m this way because I’m cold,” Laura Marie begins, but we don’t believe her for a second, not with that warm, glowing voice, confident but softly diffused and smoothed of any rough edges. “Wait until I’m gone,” she suggests in what has to be one of the most polite-sounding kiss-offs in musical history, backed by low-key guitar strumming, extremely minimal percussion, and her own multi-tracked voice. The song builds in intensity (in the gentlest sense of the word) for a concluding resolution, offering an epiphany that’s less a slap in the face than a cleared throat and gentle tap on the shoulder.
