With their third album, Brooklyn's Yeasayer prove once again that they have no interest in artistic stillness. Picking up in part where 2010's Odd Blood left off, Fragrant World is teeming and dark psych-pop. Citing Aaliyah as a key influence this time around, the group sounds more soulful and emotive here, avoiding some of the apocalyptic bombast of Odd Blood while retaining the best of its futuristic and throbbing soundscaping. This whole album is full of surprises, '90s R&B vibes, submerged EDM pulses, and a gentle complexity that's as fun as it is challenging.
