That summer our favorite record to slap on the turntable after getting off the river was Blue Screen Life, a piece of avant-pop perfection by San Diego indie-rockers Pinback. They’ve a penchant for warped quirkiness that’s pretty and ethereal, the songs buoyant and lively at times, melancholy and dark at others, yet always possessing an unmistakable intensity just under the surface.
