How do you get older, wiser, and better without becoming too serious? The UK-based Kaiser Chiefs tackle this question following sophomore slump Yours Truly, Angry Mob, which traded the upbeat fun of stellar debut Employment for stuffy mediocrity. Off With Their Heads is a return to form, bringing back the rush of hit singles “I Predict A Riot,” and “Everyday I Love You Less And Less” with killer tracks such as “Never Miss a Beat” and “Can’t Say What I Mean.”
Give credit to über-producer Mark Ronson (Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen), who infuses the record with a healthy dose of rhythm, horns, and electronic flourishes that play to the band’s Kinks and the Jam influences. The hard work of this talented quintet wins out, however, with consistent songwriting empowering a satirical look at youth culture and politics, making Off With Their Heads as close to Blur masterpiece Parklife as they’ve ever come.
